MICHAEL MATTHEWS LMT, CNMT

My professional career began as a Professional Environmental Engineer and Professional Geologist.  Due to the stress of my ownership position I left the engineering profession after 25 years.

At the age of 48 I attended and graduated from the Tennessee Institute of Healing Arts in 1999.  Initially I was certified in Neuromuscular Therapy and later in Integrative Reflexology.  My process to become a Reiki Master began in 2007.  Ultimately I became a Reiki Master (Level 4 - Teacher) in 2011.  Over the last twenty years, medical based massage therapy was the basis of my work. I now work primarily with fascia and energetic modalities.

Over the years my private practice usually was associated with the institutions that I taught at, however, I did practice at the Chattanoogan Spa, Premier Spa and Focus for Massage.  Over the years I became an instructor for the Tennessee Institute of Healing Arts, Miller-Motte Technical College (MMTC) and the Tennessee College of Applied Technology (TCAT is a Division of Chattanooga State Community College).  I became the Program Director for massage therapy at both MMTC and TCAT.  About fifteen years ago I began teaching continuing education.  Over the years I have taught over 24 continuing education courses as an approved CE provider for State of Tennessee and National Certification Board for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB).

Over the last two decades I have written articles about massage therapy for the Chattanooga Times Free Press and the publication “Natural Awakenings”.  I have been on three different Chattanooga radio shows promoting massage therapy.  In 2008, I co-founded the Chattanooga Chapter of the National Technical Honor Society at TCAT with Rhonda Castleberry. While at TCAT I was an advocate and mentor for massage students serving as an advisor for SkillsUSA. Students of mine won four Tennessee SkillsUSA gold medal and three National medals in the Job Skill Demonstration Category (2008 - Silver; 2009 - Gold; 2011 - Gold).

In 2005 I was awarded Teacher of the Year at Miller-Motte Technical College.  In 2012 I was awarded the NISOD Teaching Excellence Award representing TCAT in Austin, Texas. In 2020 with the advent of COVID I stopped performing professional bodywork. However, I still teach workshops in continuing education for professional massage therapists. In 2024 all of my classes will be held at Jillian’s Healing Arts Center, Massage Institute of Cleveland, and A Better You Day Spa. Click on the links to see the classes being offered.

All of my classes that are offered are approved by the National Certification Board of Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork (NCBTMB) or by the Tennessee State Massage Licensure Board.
